Water Damage Repair Timeline
9/14/2022 (Permalink)
The annoyance and ruination of water damage happens to U.S. homeowners a troubling 14,000 times a day. Statistically speaking, it’s happening at least once somewhere in America while you read this paragraph. And there it goes again.
Obviously, we hope your home stays bone dry as long as you live there, but should the day arise when you need emergency assistance from SERVPRO, here’s how all that will go.
Emergency Contact. When you reach out in a panic, we’ll reassure you and walk you though some guiding questions to help us understand the situation and start putting a plan together. Then we’ll set a time to meet in person. All of this will happen quickly.
Inspection and Water Damage Assessment. Once we arrive on the scene, we can flesh out the plan and stop any water that may still be flowing. We’ll make sure you know if the encroaching water has created any hazards on your property, and we’ll also give you an idea of the items or materials that will likely need replacement.
Water Removal. You’ll never get all that water out with a bucket or a regular water vacuum. That’s why we bring our pumps to make quick work of it.
Damaged Material Removal. The items that are unable to be restored can now be hauled away, expediting the process of restoration for the items and materials that remain.
Cleaning, Sanitizing and Deodorization. Water damage can leave a yucky mess. We’ll use our tools and some old-fashioned elbow grease to rid your home of unwanted stains, smells and depending on the nature of your emergency, harmful contaminants.
Drying. It’s only a short while after water invades that mold begins to grow. Even after the water is pumped out, your home will need some dehumidifying and drying out.
Monitoring. We’ll be carefully watching the entire process, making sure every box is ticked and every surface is cleaned and dried. Don’t you worry about a thing.
Repairs and Construction. Now that everything is dry and in order, we can go about the finishing touches, which may range from replacing carpet to reconstructing entire rooms. Large or small, we’ll be there to oversee every aspect of your water damage restoration.

Proper Ingredients for Fire Safety
5/2/2022 (Permalink)
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) research, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen-more than any other place in the home. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries. Most of these fires start because people aren't paying attention. While a few minutes may not seem like much time to be away from what's cooking, that is all it takes to start a fire.
Leaving cooking unattended and other unsafe kitchen practices are a recipe for disaster. Review the cooking safety tips provided below to learn how to help prevent kitchen fires before they start.
- Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food.
- When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.
- Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles such as towels, drapes, and pot holders.
- Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid free zone" of three feet around the stove.
- If an oven fire starts, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and call the fire department.
- If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off and keep the door closed. Don't open the door until the fire is completely out. If in doubt, get out of the home and call the fire department.
- Always keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan (wearing the oven mitt). Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. NEVER pour water on a grease fire.
There is no substitute for training and experience. Here at SERVPRO of Shakopee Savage Prior Lake, we are built on a foundation of fire damage restoration expertise. If your property suffers from fire damage, smoke damage, or anything in between, give us a call at 952-403-1050! We're here to service Shakopee, Prior Lake, Chanhassen, New Prague, Jordan, Elko New Market, Savage, Chaska, Victoria, Belle Plaine, Carver, Cologne, and the whole greater Twin Cities.
Putting a Stop to Moldy Carpets
5/1/2022 (Permalink)
Mold is extremely versatile. If given the proper environment mold can grow in virtually every single area on a property. While there can be many causes of mold, there are a few precautions you can take to reduce the chances that you will ever have to deal with mold damage. As with many aspects of home maintenance, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Consider taking the below steps in order to keep mold from growing on your carpets.
Control the humidity and temperature in your home.
Mold grows best with a certain amount of moisture in the air, in addition to certain temperature ranges. One way to help prevent mold growth in any location on your property is to ensure that your humidity levels never reach 60%.
Consider a different floor covering in areas prone to moisture
Some areas of a home are just more prone to humidity and moisture. Like your bathroom, for instance. Every design aspect of your home should be done with appearance and functionality in mind, and that includes making sure you’re making smart decisions about the type of floor coverings to have in certain areas based on the area’s usage along with environmental aspects. When it comes to bathroom floors, and to a lesser extent basement floors, sometimes the smartest plan is to avoid carpets altogether.
Use carpet padding that is anti-microbial
There are a few different types of padding most commonly used in residential homes. While some are more budget friendly than others, if you’re considering carpet in areas that may be more prone to moisture issues, consider installing rubber-slab carpet padding. It’s much more resistant to mold growth than traditional carpet pads.
If you do get standing water on your carpets, get it out fast!
This goes for any surface type in your home, and it’s especially true with carpets. With the right humidity levels and temperatures, mold growth can accelerate quickly when food and water are present. Getting the water and excess moisture out quickly can be the difference between a close call and a serious health problem for your family.
Clean your carpets regularly
Vacuuming your carpets regularly, along with having them professionally steam cleaned, can go a long way in preventing mold growth. One of the components of rapid mold growth is food, and mold loves dirt, grime, food, and any other organic substance that can be found in your carpet fibers. Regularly cleaning your carpets is a great way to help reduce the likelihood of dealing with mold in the future!
Typically, if you have black mold on your carpets a visual inspection is all that is necessary. But in other instances, you may notice a musty smell or perhaps you’ve also been experiencing some troubling health issues that you think may be attributed to high levels of mold. In most states, mold remediation companies must be different than mold testing companies. The way it works is that the mold testing company will come take environmental samples from your home and have them sent off to a lab to be evaluated. If it’s determined through the testing that your home has a toxic black mold problem, it’s at that point that you’ll want to hire a mold removal company like us. Call our franchises!

Working Together Conference & Products Show
4/21/2022 (Permalink)
Ryan, Jeff, and Aimee recently attended MN Multi Housing Association (MHA)'s Working Together Conference and Product Show. This event consisted of two days of learning, training, and networking. This conference was designed to empower you and your staff to overcome obstacles, share ideas, and understand how to thrive in today's ever-changing times. Needless to say, it was great to have these three hooligans representing SERVPRO of Minnetonka! They did an awesome job sharing our company's expertise in both commercial and residential restoration services. The Minnesota Multi Housing Association (MHA) was founded in 1967 to promote the highest standards in the development, management and maintenance of rental and owner-occupied multi housing. While members include the state's largest apartment management companies, developers, common interest communities, and providers of related products and services, the majority of our members own or manage fewer than 20 units each. Governed by our Board of Directors, all members of the Minnesota Multi Housing Association commit themselves to the ethical principles and standards of our Code of Ethics.
Why are we involved?
As a member of MHA, we get to work directly with clients to allow them to have a greater understanding of our business. By working with them directly at these conferences, we can gain insight on their needs as clients, all the while explaining to them the multitude of services that we can offer them.
It's very important to us that we are first seen as a positive resource for our community. We want our clients to understand that you can always call us with questions and concerns, without knowing if you need our services or not. We are here to be a resource for you!

Advanced Technology
3/30/2022 (Permalink)
The restoration industry has seen significant technological advancements over the years. Our technicians here at SERVPRO have taken full advantage of these advancements through the utilization of the various advanced technologies. In today's blog, we will cover three of our team's favorite advanced technologies that are used to facilitate moisture detection, drying, and sanitation. Read more to learn about infrared cameras, air movers and dehumidifiers, and OSHA-approved cleaning agents!
How do we detect moisture?
Infrared Cameras!
In the event of a water emergency, the first step is to detect water damage, measure the extent of the water damage, and monitor the moisture levels in the affected area(s). Water damage investigation has come a long way! We used advanced technologies, such as infrared cameras, to help expedite the process of detecting water damage. By speeding this up, we can save you from secondary water damage by identifying the location of moisture that is often unseen by the naked eye. Infrared cameras are used to scan locations of moisture inside of flooring, ceilings, and walls that must be extracted to prevent secondary water damage and microbial growth. We don't stop at infrared cameras though! We use hygrometers and sensitive motor detectors that help us measure the saturation level of the moisture.
What do we use for drying?
Air Movers and Dehumidifiers!
After water damage has been identified, it is essential to extract the water immediately! Once any standing water has been extracted, affected area(s) must be thoroughly dried in order to prevent secondary damage and mold. Our technicians facilitate this process by using air movers and dehumidifiers during a water damage emergency. Air movers work to quickly evaporate moisture and dehumidifiers extract water vapor lingering in the air. When used in tandem, our industrial strength air movers and powerful dehumidifiers can protect your property's flooring, walls, and furniture from warping and swelling.
How do we sanitize?
OSHA-Approved Cleaning Agents!
Once the affected areas have been extracted of water and dried completely, the water damaged areas should be cleaned and sanitized. This sanitization process completely eliminates odors and contaminants that could lead to issues in the future. Here at SERVPRO we utilize two different types of cleaning agents: disinfectants and deodorizers. Our disinfection cleaning agents work to prevent the growth of dangerous microbials including mildew, fungi, and other types of bacteria. With the help of our deodorization agents, odors that result from excess moisture are eradicated!

Is Your Office Building Prepared for Disaster?
3/25/2022 (Permalink)
Are you an owner of an office building or similar type of commercial space? Do you have fire safety and emergency preparedness meetings? Being prepared by having a well-thought-out emergency plan not only protects your property, but the people that are on your property!
Identify Fire Extinguisher Locations
In case of a fire damage situation, you will want to ensure that you have a sufficient number of fire extinguishers readily available throughout your property. By taking the time to map out and guide the people in your building to these locations, you will minimize the panic in a dangerous situation. If your employees or guests do not know where a fire extinguisher is located, it can make an already risky situation even more dangerous.
Monitor Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms
Smoke detector and fire alarm systems should be inspected regularly to ensure that they are functioning properly. If these systems are not running properly, you will not be alarmed in the event of a fire or smoke emergency situation. Ensuring that there is a clearly marked exit plan is essential for your building in the event that a smoke detector and fire alarm go off.
Host Safety Trainings
A vital step for fire safety preparedness is safety training for all people involved. By including a fire safety training course in your workplace, you will help the occupants know exactly what they should do if an emergency such as a gas leak, a fire, severe weather event, or flooding occurs. Having a plan in place will reduce panic and disorganization when time is of the essence.
Make Emergency Exits Obvious
Be sure to clearly identify which doors can be used in the event of an emergency situation. Illuminated exit signs can help direct occupants out of the building in case of an emergency. Tape maps of the nearest exit around the walls of the building to help expedite the evacuation process.
SERVPRO of Shakopee Savage Prior Lake is here to help 24/7 365 days a year should disaster ever strike your property! Call us at 952-403-1050 to dispatch a crew or get more information on how we can help make it, "Like it never even happened."
Fire Safety Tips for Warmer Months
3/15/2022 (Permalink)
Warm weather is on the horizon! It's time to switch from sweaters to shorts, deep fryers to grills, and indoor parties to backyard barbecues. Just because we're less inclined to switch on the heat does not mean that we shouldn't be vigilant when it comes to protecting ourselves and our property from fire hazards. See below for high-risk areas for fire damage and how to maintain them.
Spring Fire Safety Tips
Fire cannot be avoided when you're preparing a perfectly cooked steak or patty on the grill. From the get-go, you've got inherent risks. Before starting a grill, be sure to check all potential problematic points including the propane tank, the hose, and all connecting points. You can do this while your meat is marinating or while you're trimming your chicken!
We understand that every house has a pyro-happy Boy/Girl Scout around. When starting a charcoal grill, charcoal should only be soaked with charcoal starter fluid. Avoid using lighter fluid as that can create a burst of heat and flames can get out of control quickly!
Every Dad loves a shiny, clean grill. Nearly 20% of all grill structure fires occur due to failing to clean the grill before and after use. Give your grill a nice scrape down while it's hot so it's ready to go for next time!
There's nothing worse than dropping your smore into a fire, right? Wrong! There's nothing worse than falling into a fire yourself! Never leave young children unattended near a fire pit.
Safety first, safety first, safety first! Fill a bucket with water and set it next to your put before your even build a fire. Avoid throwing leaves, pine cones, pine needs, and paper into a fire pit as they catch fire quickly and can result in dangerous floating embers.
When things go awry, we're your guy!
In any emergency situation, always call 9-1-1 before calling SERVPRO of Shakopee / Savage / Prior Lake. Once a fire has been properly handled by the fire department, give us a call at 952-403-1050! We're always "Here to Help!"
Preventing Spring Water Damage
3/14/2022 (Permalink)
We all know the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers." With springtime comes melting snow and heavy downpours, which can bring unwanted surprises to light on your property like roof leaks or water that comes through in your basement's foundation. Soggy carpet and dripping ceilings often lead to water damage. Have no fear! Taking the following steps can help prevent water damage in the spring.
Tips to Prevent Springtime Water Damage
- Groom your gutters. Keep the flow flowing! By cleaning your gutters and keeping them damage free, water will be directed away from your house with downspout extensions.
- Cover up! Using plastic covers around window wells can keep rain from seeping in.
- Show your roof some love. Give your roof some much needed TLC by replacing missing singles, any damage from storms or weather, and keep flashing sealed. We promise it's worth the effort!
- Be an Einstein landscaper. When putting decoration or landscaping around your home, make sure to slope the ground away from your foundation. This will help prevent water from pooling and causing future water damage issues.
- It's all about the foundation. By repairing cracks and holes in your home's foundation as soon as they are found, you can keep the water away and minimize your odds of water damage!
Here at SERVPRO of Shakopee / Savage / Prior Lake, we know that water damage can be a hassle. If you follow the above tips, you might just save yourself from seeing our bright green vans. Whether you use our tips or not, water damage can still happen. That's where we come in!

Maintaining Your Smoke Alarm
2/4/2022 (Permalink)
To avoid a total fire damage disaster, properly maintain your smoke alarms so that you're notified of any suspicious situations immediately!
Experiencing a fire on your property can be one of the most stressful situations you can have as a property owner. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Not only can fire damage restoration be expensive, but the process can take much longer than drying out a flooded room.
Smoke and Fire Alarms
In more than half of the homes that reported fires to U.S fire departments, the fire alarm sounded to alert the residents of the property. The death rate per 1,000 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have working smoke alarms (NFPA).
Here's what you need to know!
Smoke alarms should be interconnected. when one sounds in the basement, all other alarms around the house should alert you of potential smoke damage.
Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. As you're sweeping the floors, vacuuming, or moving around the house doing chores, take a second to press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years. With the advancement of time, smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, in addition to mitigating false alarms.
What do you do when you experience fire damage?
Call us, of course! We are one of the top fire damage restoration companies near you. We are available 24/7 and have crews ready round the clock to respond to any emergency that you might have. We've got the committed people and the most advanced tools to make restoring your home as painless as possible.
Preventing Household Winter Water Damage
1/23/2022 (Permalink)
With our vast commercial and residential water damage restoration capabilities, you'll never have to ask yourself who to call again!
No matter the season somehow water can always find a way to damage properties. During the cold season, uninsulated pipes can freeze and burst, ice dams can cause roofing issues, and thawed snow can enter basements. Read the blog below to see what you can do as a property manager to prevent winter water damage.
Prevent Frozen Pipes
- Insulate all water pipes in unheated areas whether its a crawl space, under the kitchen, in the basement, or behind bathroom cabinets.
- Ensure that you leave your home at an adequate temperature if you leave for an extended period of time. If you're nervous about the functionality of your heating system, a trusted person should check on your home once a week.
- Running a trickle of water through pipes will help prevent them from freezing. Although this is not a long-term solution, it can help save your pipes from bursting in a pinch.
Preventing Ice Dams
- Keep the snow on your roof under 15 centimeters. To remove snow from the roof, use a roof rake or long-handled brush to avoid using a ladder.
- Insulate your attic to prevent warm air from melting snow on your roof. If water is melting and then freezing, it can cause ice dams to form at the edge of your roof.
- Install a water membrane underneath the roof shingles to help prevent water from seeping in.
General Winter Water Damage Safety Tips
- Place a water leak detector near high risk areas such as on sump pumps, near water-bearing fixtures, and around pipes.
- Check your water supply lines annually for leaks. Appliances such as the hot water heater, washing machine, and refrigerator will have these supply lines.
- Disconnect your outdoor hoses. This will prevent water from getting into the line and creating a blockage which in turn can cause backflow.

Flooding - Cold snaps and freezes and damage pipes and cause them to burst. This expulsion of water can lead to severe water damage and flooded areas that will need immediate emergency water mitigation.
Roof Leaks - From ice dams to heavy snow and ice breaking through your shingles, winter storms can be harsh on your roof. With holes in your shingles or blockages in your pipes, it leaves your property exposed to moisture damage.

Condominium Crisis: Hoarding and Abandonment
12/15/2021 (Permalink)
Using SERVPRO’s time-tested and industry-approved steps, along with our proprietary cleaning products and methods, we are "Here to Help!"
In places where you'd least expect it, you might be surprised to find instances of hoarding. This specific condominium had to deal with a tenant that not only abandoned their condo, but left the mess for our SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake technicians to handle.
What is Hoarding?
No, hoarding is not the same as your grandma collecting knick-knacks in an organized, intentional, and targeted fashion. Don't be freaked out if she can't get enough of collecting fancy china!
People with hoarding have persistent difficulty getting rid of or parting with possessions due to a perceived need to save them. In these instances, attempting to part with these possessions causes great distress and lead to decisions to save them.
The prevalence of hoarding seems small at 2.6%, but can cause massive issues. Hoarding can cause issues within relationships, social and work activities, and other important areas of functioning.
How does hoarding affect a home?
Although hoarding can range from very mild to severe cases, it can create cramped living situations, narrow pathways, and make areas like kitchen countertops and stoves virtually unusable.
Depending on the items that are collected (trash, magazines, mail, books, rotten food) it can cause significant stress on the integrity of a home.
- Heavy items can cause stress on the foundation of the home. Floorboards and rooms that are overstuffed with items can cause warping in walls and flooring.
- Rotten food can soil surrounding materials leaving stains, rotting natural wood, and discoloring paint on walls.
SERVPRO saves the day!
Cleaning is at the heart of the restoration work that we do, regardless of what disaster may have damaged your home. Our certified technicians have mastered multiple layers of recovery tactics to clean a damaged property such as:
- Wiping Surfaces
- Cleaning Carpets and Material
- Deodorization
- Biohazard Cleanup

We use our patented 3 C's to bring a higher standard of clean to the places we gather. For more information, visit this link on our website.

What is Minnesota's Winter Storm Outlook?
12/7/2021 (Permalink)
As a leader in storm and water damage restoration, SERVPRO has the specialized training and expertise to restore your home back normal.
According to the Farmers Almanac, they're predicting a cold and snowy winter for Minnesota. "Numb's the Word, Just Shovelin' Along" to be exact. January should start fairly mild in temperature, but will then trend towards colder conditions during the middle and latter part of the month. Apparently there will even be a blizzard at the end of January.
How to Prepare for Cold Temperatures
Prepare Your Home
According to the CDC, it is highly important to winterize your home to keep it safe and warm during the winter months.
- Insulate water lines that run outdoors or along exterior walls.
- Clean out your gutters and repair roof leaks
- Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows.
Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Emergencies
Install a CO detector to alert you if you are in the presence of the deadly, odorless, colorless gas.
- Inspect any gas lines that you may have in your home. Often times your furnace or stove will be the culprit.
Prepare Your Vehicle
Get your vehicle ready for snowy, blowy roads and chilly travelling conditions.
- Keep your gas tank full to avoid ice buildup within the tank and fuel lines.
- Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer

Did you fail to insulate your pipes properly?
Has the cold weather burst one of your pipes?
Is water streaming everywhere?

- Evacuation Plan: In large commercial buildings, it is essential to post a fire evacuation plans around the workplace. Preventing Winter Water Damage
11/30/2021 (Permalink)
In Minnesota, winter is cold, uncomfortable, and unfortunately brings with it the scary possibility that your home will suffer winter water damage. When temperatures dip below freezing, there are several things that can cause dramatic water damage in your property. See the water damage prevention tips below to see how regular maintenance and inspection can lower your risks for water damage.
Here are the top causes of water damage in the winter:
Burst Pipes
Extremely low temperatures can wreak havoc on pipes. Many people think that pipes burst because of the freezing and expanding, however, it is more from the increasing water pressure when there is blockage. By ensuring that your pipes have proper insulation, you can reduce the risk of having a burst pipe during the winter months. Any pipes that lead to the outdoors or are outdoors, including anything in a weakly heated area (some basements and garages) should be properly insulated. A trick to make sure that your pipes don't freezing is to leave your faucets with a small drip so that water is constantly flowing in the pipe, making it unable to freeze.
Blocked Gutters
Gutters are made to bring water to a safe place away from your home so that water damage does not occur. Many people, unfortunately, take their utters for granted. If your gutters are clogged with materials like ice or debris, it may lead to a serious issue. When water freezes within your gutters, this water can seep into your home and cause damage when it begins melting. Make sure to keep your gutters clean at all times so that water does not have a chance to build up and freeze, creating a blockage and problems down the line.
Exterior Water Sources
Water sources from the outdoors can become even more dangerous in freezing temperatures even more so than in the summer. Make sure to drain any garden hoses and store them somewhere safe for the winter. Shut off your outdoor water valves so that in the event of a pipe burst, water will not rush back into your home.
Even if you take all of the precautionary measures listed in this blog, you may still experience water damage. If you are unequipped to restore water damage within your home, call our certified technicians at 952-403-1050. SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake will make sure your water damage restoration is done right.
Examining Your Roof after Storm Damage
11/29/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake offers comprehensive storm damage cleanup and restoration services in the greater Twin Cities.
When a significant storm blows through your property, it's probably a great idea to inspect your property for any potential storm damage. Storm damage can stem from high winds, flying debris, hail, and heavy rainfall. Your main line of defense for your property is the roof and in these instances, it surely can take a beating. Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to things like dings and holes in your gutters, as well as tears in your window screens. These examples are telltale signs of hail damage.
After inspection, you may see missing tiles or other signs of roof damage from the ground. However, most leaks don't represent a need for a whole roof replacement. Usually the leak, coming from the roof damage, is coming from something requiring minor repair. Find the source of the leak, stop the leaking, and clean up the water damage that has occurred.
Finding the Source of the Leak
Wind damage, hail damage, and debris that crashes into your roof can create holes that lets rain into your property. By examining the ceilings and corners of the walls from inside, you may be able to identify stains that indicate a leak source and discover areas that need roof repair. There may be a chance that you discover water stains that run down the wall. If found, grab a light source and head over to that area immediately. Try to find the source of the water stain. Some examples include:
- Vent Pipes
- Chimneys
- Fans and vents
- Window Dormers
- Unsecured nails and nail holes
Fixing the Water Damage
When you find hints of water damage or a leak in your roof, it's time to complete a roof repair! Begin by looking for materials that have been damaged by water. Check for discolorations, rotting wood, wet drywall, and soggy insulation. When you find potential microbial growths, be careful not to spread it during cleanup. Complete drying of water damage and repairing of roof leaks is critical to preventing mold growth and secondary damages.
For any of your storm damage, mold damage, or roof leak repair needs, contact us at 952-403-1050! We have knowledgeable technicians to clean up water damage and a growing reconstruction division to fix any structural damages.

- Force retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks and other service businesses to close
- Disrupt communication, the ability to cook, use water, and utilize transportation options
How to Protect Yourself During a Power Outage
- Limit the amount of time you open your freezers and refrigerators. By keeping the cold air trapped inside, you food will keep from spoiling.
- Do not use a gas stove to heat your home as this could lead to extensive fire damage.
- If it is safe to travel, go to an alternate location for heat and cooling.
- Fuel may become an issue - only use generators outdoors and away from windows if you absolutely need it.
Prepare for a power outage sooner rather than later. By taking inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity, you will be able to determine what is absolutely necessary in the time of a power outage. Ensure that you have flashlights with extra batteries, a thermometer in your refrigerator to monitor temperature, electrical equipment charged, and gas tanks full.

Preparing for a Winter Storm
11/22/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake offers comprehensive storm damage cleanup and restoration services in the Twin Cities.
What does a winter storm look like?
Winter storms create a higher risk for car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning, and heart attacks from overexertion. Minnesota is notorious for its frigid and snowy winter seasons. A winter winter storm has many faces and can last only a few hours or up to several days. A winter storm can cut off heat, power, and communication services and put older adults, children, and sick individuals at greater risk. Follow along the following tips to help protecting yourself from winter weather.
How do you protect yourself from winter weather?
As the old saying goes, "Proper preparation prevents poor performance."
Be highly aware of weather reports and warnings of freezing weather and winter storms. Be on the look out for emergency information and alerts and sign up for your local community's warning system.
Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Keep your tank closer to full than empty in the winter so that if you experience a breakdown, you're able to keep your car running for longer. Include jumper cables, sand in case you get stuck, an additional layer of clothing, water, and maybe a few snacks.
Make a plan. Use a guide such as this one on Ready.gov to tailor your emergency plan and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities.
Prepare your home to keep out the frigid temperatures with proper insulation, caulking, and weather stripping. To avoid a water damage event like a burst frozen pipe, ensure that your property's insulation will suffice for your location and temperatures.
In the event that you experience water damage for any reason such as a burst pipe, gutter blockage, or outside water sources, call SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake. We have the ability to quickly dispatch our 30 IICRC certified technicians and 15+ service vehicles to anywhere in the greater Twin Cities area. 952-403-1050 today!
Including Your Pets in Your Fire Evacuation Plan
11/22/2021 (Permalink)
Pictured is a ceiling damaged by a raging fire. All 3 levels were affected after a fire broke out while a family was cooking.
Although not everyone may entirely agree... pets are family too! It is crucial for families to create a fire evacuation plan that they can quickly put into action in the event that there is an emergency. When you ensure that all members of your family understand what to do if a fire breaks out in your home, it decreases the need to take unnecessary risks and is a helpful tool to use in case of panic. Even if you do have to consider fire damage restoration in the aftermath, you will find excellent consolation knowing that you have created a plan to follow. In case of a fire emergency, the tips below will help you include every family member - even the ones with paws, wings, or scales!
Planning with Pets
Prepare an Emergency Food Kit
When a fire sparks in your home, you won't have time to think about how many cans of wet food to grab or be able to count out a sufficient amount of daily cups for your pet. By compiling these items beforehand, you will be able to grab and go, saving you precious time in a dangerous situation. Don't forget to pack water, bowls, doggy bags, potential litter. A spare collar with your animal's information wouldn't be a bad idea either!
Create a Form of Shelter
By putting your pet's emergency kit into a crate or some form of travel shelter, you won't have to think about grabbing multiple bags and forgetting the necessities. Even something as simple as a blanket will help keep your pet comfortable in a stressful situation like a fire.
Medication
Fire damage can sometimes make it impossible to return to your property until it is safe, which may take longer than you think. If you are unable to return to your home, you won't be able to access your pet's vital medication. A simple plastic bag will do the trick - just toss it in with your food and other essential materials.
Many people become extremely overwhelmed during and after a fire damage event. We know that coping with the aftermath can be confusing, scary, and just plain difficult. That's why we're always here to help whether you are in downtown Minneapolis, Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, Scott County, or anywhere in the greater Twin Cities area. Our team can assist you in every step of the way.

Shakopee Career Expo - On Fire!

Here are Aimee and Tierney with their fully setup table with freebies and informational flyers!
Getting Involved
Shakopee High School, through the Academies of Shakopee, hosted the 2021 Career Expo this November! The Career Expo is a free annual event for high school students and community partners alike, serving as an opportunity for students to learn about occupations and businesses, and partners to provide information on their industries and companies. The Expo also serves as an opportunity for employers/partners and students to discuss future internship and career/job openings.
Aimee and Tierney had an awesome time being a part of the Shakopee High School Career Expo. with a focus on fire damage, these two were able to share finer details about the processes of our company with prospective employees. Although most students are currently too young to be hired, it gives them a golden opportunity in the future.
Aimee and Tierney were asked questions ranging from simple processes to detailed methods of fire damage restoration. Some examples include:
- How long does fire damage restoration take?
- Is fire damage cleanup a dangerous process?
- How many people does it take to clean up after fire damage?
- What products do you use to clean soot damage?
- What is the most difficult part about smoke damage cleanup?
We promise you - that list barely scratches the surface!
Overall, the opportunity to engage students and inform them about how our company works was a blast! We're very fortunate to be able to educate anyone at any age about the restoration industry.

Winter Fire Damage Prevention
11/17/2021 (Permalink)
As fire and water restoration specialists, we have the training, experience and specialized equipment necessary to restore your home or business!
Believe it or not, fire damage occurs more often during the winter months. Many homeowners will light their chimneys, cook out, and crank up the thermostat when the temperature drops. In the event of fire damage, timely mitigation is the best way to reduce your fire damage costs. We know that restoration is virtually a requirement after fire damage occurs, but how about measures to prevent fire damage? Look no further!
Main Fire Hazards
Holiday Lights - for those of us who put up holiday lights right after Halloween (Thanksgiving, who?), your home's holiday lights might become hazardous. While hanging up your lights, be sure to double-check any wires or bulbs that might become hazardous.
Electronics - technology is always advancing and you might receive a fancy new piece of electronics for the holidays. Untested electronics are a major fire hazard and every single year people light up their living rooms with more than their Christmas tree.
The Holiday Tree - Speaking of trees.... many people begin their holiday season with a bushy, green, pine-smelling bunch of branches. However, as time goes on, these supple branches die and can become a nasty problem (and we're not talking about the cleanup). Be sure your tree is properly watered, at least a couple feet away from an outlet, and for Pete's sake don't put any candles nearby!
Holiday's never stop our fire restoration services!
Here at SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake, even if it is the holiday season, we are still faster to any sized disaster! The fire department will have to put our your fire, but we will zip in immediately after it is safe to handle deeper restorations. As your local water damage and fire damage company, we can handle it all! From start to finish (yes that means reconstruction services, too!), we're here to help. Call 952-403-1050 today with any questions about our services.
An Informational Tidbit on Fire Damage
11/16/2021 (Permalink)
The fire triangle illustrates the three elements a fire needs to ignite: heat, fuel, and an oxidizing agent.
A Little Lesson About Fire
When the leaves begin to fall and snowflakes begin to flurry around, people begin to dread the cold weather. "Time to crank up the heat!" As much as we adore our HVAC heating systems and indoor fireplaces, it is important to be cognizant of the hazards of fires.
Each year, from 2017 to 2019, there was an estimated average of 106,700 multifamily residential building fires. These fires results in 400 deaths, 3,875 injuries, and over $1.7 billion dollars in property losses. Wow!
It is important to be aware of the obvious concerns like avoiding crowding your furnace or keeping things by an open flame, but it is important to consider other threats. Cooking (around 74%) was the leading cause of multifamily residential building homes. In addition to cooking, cooking areas and kitchens were the primary areas of origin for non-confined multifamily residential building fires. Holiday lights are also on the list! Be aware of how many cords you're plugging into an extension cord.
24/7 Fire Restoration Services
Our certified technicians are on the clock 24 hours a day, seven days a week year round. Even though multifamily residential building fires occur most commonly from 4pm-9pm, you could be in the 3% that occur at 1am. In that case, we are the ones to call! Once the firefighters take care of business, we will follow with the water damage and fire damage mitigation steps.
If your property has been affected by fire damage, call SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake today at 952-473-4837. We're here to service Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, and the greater Twin Cities area in general. We're always "Here to Help!"

Here is an instance where we had to remove drywall and flooring that was damaged by intruding water.
Water Damage Restoration
When you have a water damage event on your property, SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake will respond quickly to prevent further damage and begin the water repair and restoration process.
Water damage is caused by intruding water that attacks materials, creating rotting wood, microbial growth, bacterial growth, rusting of steel, swelling of wood, and de-lamination of materials like carpet and plywood.
Originating from a wide variety of sources like a dishwasher hose, a washing machine overflow, broken and leaking pipes, flooding, and building envelope failures, 13.7% of all water used in a home today can be attributed to plumbing leaks.
Small Hole, Massive Problem
On average, each home in the United States will waste approximately 10,000 gallons of water. per year For example, a tiny 1/8th inch hole in a pipe can release almost 250 gallons of water per day. This scary statistic alone should be enough reasoning as to why you should replace any worn pipe fittings and hose connections to all household appliances that use water at least once per year.
Following Procedure
The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is one of the main certifying bodies that regulates and educates our technicians on water damage restoration procedures. Although every water damage event is different, the water damage restoration steps are often the same. To review how we handle water damage restoration, check out our process here.
Why choose SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake?
First, our customer-focused professionals will assess the water damage to your property. Afterwards, our top-notch people will help ensure that you understand the severity of the damage so that you are able to make the best decisions for the restoration of your home.

Get Your Furnace Ready for Winter!
11/12/2021 (Permalink)
We're back in full swing for school, the leaves are dropping like flies, and your Starbucks Pumpkin flavored beverage is only doing so much to stave off the morning chill. It's that dreaded time of year again: turning your HVAC system from "Cool" to "Heat." Take a quick moment to check the following list to be sure that your furnace is good to go for the upcoming winter and dropping temperatures.
Tips to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter
- Change your air filters. More than likely, you have air filters behind a vent grill in a wall or ceiling, or potentially a single filter in the HVAC system itself. By cleaning or replacing your filter, you will keep nasty particles out of you HVAC system and the air that you breathe in general will be cleaner.
- Clean the heat exchanger. By hiring a trained professional, your heat exchanger should be brushed and vacuumed out annually. Why? The technician will check for cracks or damages that could lead to a dangerous carbon monoxide leak.
- Inspect your carbon monoxide detectors. Just like your fire detectors, you should be routinely inspecting and replacing your carbon monoxide detectors. These alarms will help protect you from the "silent killer."
- Remove any items you have stored near your furnace. Especially the flammable ones! It is extremely dangerous to congest your furnace with items, particularly anything that is likely to catch fire. Remove any items that are sitting on top or in front of your air vents, too.
- Inspect the exhaust flue that is outside. Surprisingly enough, you might have a smart animal that has built a nest in your flue or a tree that has grown just a little too much and is now blocking the way. Clear any obstruction to ensure that your HVAC system can work properly.
If you have any issues with these tips, don't be afraid to contact your local HVAC professional. It'll always be better to prepare than to deal with fire damage later. If fire damage occurs in your home, don't hesitate to call us! We're here to help all day every day!

Slow Down Water Damage
11/8/2021 (Permalink)
Whether you live near Lake Minnetonka, in the urban areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul, or in surrounding communities, we can help!
Traveling Water Damage
When your property faces water damage, it can be an eye-opening experience. The effects of water damage can be extremely daunting as the building's materials and your personal contents are being soaked from the water. In this blog, you will discover that three are steps that you can take in order to minimize the amount of water damage that will occur.
Follow these water damage cleanup steps:
Eradicate the source of the water.
- Although this is seemingly obvious, many people will panic when they see flooding water on their property. Before you move on to any of the next steps, you need to complete this one first, without a doubt. Sometimes the source of the water isn't obvious and you will have to search around your property for a burst pipe, a broken water heater, or even a blocked gutter.
Remove as much water as possible.
- Make sure that the water is not contaminated before trying to extract the water! If the water is dirty (sewage, flood water, or has been sitting for a long period of time) you should always wait for a water restoration professional to avoid illness. If there are only a few inches on the floor, you can use whatever tools you have available to clean it up.
Separate all personal items from the affected areas.
- To prevent your personal belongings from suffering water damage, remove all materials that not are not attached to the floors or the walls. Make certain that you are grabbing any porous materials like wood, fabrics, and paper because they pose the highest risk for permanent damage.
Get those fans movin'!
- One of the most important parts of the drying process is to remove as much moisture from the air as possible. You can use any dehumidifiers or large fans in addition to opening windows as long as the outside conditions will allow for proper drying. By keeping the air circulating, you will prevent bacterial growth and promote drying.
If you are unable to perform any of these functions yourself, give us a call! We're professionally trained and always ready for anything!

Preventing Furnace Fires in your Home
10/25/2021 (Permalink)
Diminish the chances that a furnace starts a fire in your home by following these tips!
The National Fire Protection Association claims that more than one in six home fires originate from heating equipment, which is the second most common cause of a fire behind cooking. Even though a large majority of these pieces of heating equipment are space heaters or fire places, one out of every ten starts with a central heating system.
Follow the tips below to minimize your chances for a furnace fire!
- Have your furnace serviced - Prior to the cold season, hire a professional to inspect your equipment to ensure your furnace is working properly.
- Replace the air filter - You should replace your filter every month or so, depending on the manufacturer's specifications. Furnace filters help prevent air contamination in your home.
- Check and clean air vents and ducts - it's as simple as getting out your vacuum and removing the dust in your vents and ducts. We know this job can suck, so you can always hire a professional!
- Inspect the exhaust vent - Ensure that your exhaust vent is clear from any obstruction such as a rodent's nest, leaves, or snow.
- Remove items from around the furnace - if there are flammable items near a flame, need we say more? Clear the area of all flammable objects.
When winterizing your home or preparing for cold season, your furnace should be on the list! All of these maintenance tasks can be complete in just a few hours. If you're not comfortable with any of these processes, call a professional! For professional fire, water, and mold remediation services, give us a jingle at 952-403-1050!
Content Cleaning: What is it and how do we do it?
9/7/2021 (Permalink)
Here is an example of a children's toy that was damaged by fire and then cleaned up by our certified technicians.
As one of the top SERVPRO franchises in Minnesota, SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake is there to help you when everything has been turned upside down by fire damage. When your property has been ravaged by flames, many important belongings and documents can be severely damaged by flames, soot, and smoke odors. With our expansive cleaning capabilities, we are able to salvage many of your items and restore them to make it look "Like it never even happened." By doing this, we can save you money by restoring your contents instead of having to replace them.
Packing Out the Contents
The first thing to do after you experience fire damage is to assess the entire property for damage. By assessing the damage, we will be able to figure out what our next steps are regarding cleaning your personal belongings. Our certified technicians will determine whether or not the items are salvageable, they will take photos of all of the contents, they will take inventory of items that are restorable, and then we will safely and carefully pack up all of the items to be moved. Once boxed up, the items will be labeled by name and stored in our 18,000 square foot warehouse in climate-controlled vault storage.
The Cleaning
Once the contents have been safely moved to our warehouse, they are brought into our cleaning room where our certified technicians will dictate the best method of cleaning. They will determine the best path of cleaning based on several factors:
- Are they hard or soft contents?
- Do they need to be hand washed or machine washed?
- What sort of chemical can be used that won't damage the material?
Hard contents, such as dishes, vases, and other sturdy objects will be cleaned in machines like ultrasonic equipment and deodorizers for smoke odor. For objects that cannot handle the harshness of an automated machine, we will hand-clean the item with environmentally-friendly degreaser or odor counteractants.
Moving Back Home
After our technicians mitigate the fire damage and our reconstruction division repairs your property back to normal, our team will pack up your contents and send them to your home. With your fire damaged contents repair back to normal, you can enjoy living life the way it was prior to your properties' fire.
If you find yourself in need of water or fire damage mitigation, content cleaning, or reconstruction services, give us a ring today at 952-403-1050. We service Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, and the greater Twin Cities Area (Minneapolis and St. Paul).
Tips for Preventing Water Damage in Your Home
8/23/2021 (Permalink)
Here is a daily departure photo of rooms with fans after water damage has occurred,
Water damage is one of the most common structural damage problems home and business owners have to deal with. Unlike other types of damage, which tend to be sudden and easy to notice, water damage usually happens slowly over time and is not noticeable until it's too late. However, some types of water damage, such as those from hurricanes and thunderstorms, can occur very quickly with disastrous results.
If you want to make sure that you never have to call for a water damage restoration company near you, it's best to prepare your property for water damage before disaster strikes.
The easiest way to avoid having to call an excellent water damage restoration company such as ours is to try to avoid water damage altogether. Although this can be a tall order, especially within storm season, that gives you all the more reason to be prepared.
4 Essential Water Damage Prevention Practices:
Fix and renovate your plumbing.
Most people associate water damage with thunderstorms and hurricanes, when in reality, the real problem is bad plumbing. Whether it's a new but poorly constructed building or an older building that has had no plumbing renovation in decades - a water pipe burst in a house can wreak havoc either way. Updating your plumbing can be as simple as starting with the hoses and faucets and then you can move on to the seals and pipes.
Take care of your building's exterior structure.
Storms and other disastrous weather conditions are a primary task for water restoration companies. To avoid having to deal with the consequences of a weather disaster, it is crucial to renovate your building's exterior by:
- Caulking and sealing windows
- Installing impact windows
- Replace missing or damage shingles on your roof
- Clean downspouts and install gutter guards
- Repair outside walls if they are not fully sealed
Prevent water seepage by resealing your basement.
Basement water damage restoration is extremely common for our business. It is an extremely common area or water seepage to occur. Routinely check for cracks in the building's foundation and floor slabs - make it an effort to reseal them. Be sure to install backwater valves to your sewage system to help avoid sewer backup.
Keep your eyes peeled for mold growth.
Mold is not only caused by water damage, but it also causes further water damage by eroding your building's foundation. Check for mold growth in your basement, crawlspace, and roof to make sure that your structure is in superior condition.
If you are unsure whether or not you have water damage or mold damage, we are a water damage restoration resource for you. Give us a call at 952-403-1050 with any of your needs.

Fire Damage Restoration Process
7/22/2021 (Permalink)
The fire damage restoration process includes the removal of soot residues from various surfaces and materials. Depending on the severity of the fire, the soot that remains can be drastically different from one fire to the next.
Fires that give off smoke produce smoke-filled residues and soot. When smoke is released into the air when various materials are decomposing, the soot is in the form of suspended particles, gases, and aerosols.
The fire damage restoration process is dependent on what types of residue is on the material. Different cleaning and restoration methods will be used for each residue.
- Cleaning Dry Smoke Residue
- Cleaning Wet Smoke Residue
- Protein Residue
- Fuel Oil Soot Residue
During a fire, soot and smoke particles love to settle on and adhere to any surface they can get their hands on. Our fire damage restoration process is top-notch and means we have the capability to remove and clean these residues. Put confidence in your local professionals that provide you with the best fire restoration services available!
How To Tell If Water Damage Is Old
7/19/2021 (Permalink)
As water damage restoration experts, we understand the issues that water damage presents, especially when it isn't in your sight. When discovered, water spots are clues that indicate a leaky pipe or condensation that is generating the problem.
Even though it impossible to know exactly how long your water damage issues have lingered, there are steps you can take to tell if your water damage is old or new.
Steps to Determining if your Water Damage is Old
- Review the history of the house. As soon as water spots are discovered, take note of when you found them. IT's important to recognize and understand what is new and what is old because smaller leaks can take months to appear.
- Touch the water spot. Water damage drywall or a water damage ceiling spot will be mushy and squishy since the material will have soaked up a fair amount of water. A newer spot will be wet, but the drywall and ceiling will remain strong.
- Examine the materials. It's important to know what materials your walls and ceilings are composed of because thick paint or tiles can trap water. If this is the circumstance, even a small spot where there is water damage can indicate that it has been around for awhile.

Aimee, Tierney, and Scott at their booth in Mendota Heights.
Last week Scott (Owner), Aimee (Director of Client Services), and Tierney (Marketing Specialist) hosted a booth at the IREM Minnesota Chapter Golf Tournament!
What a day it was! With a heat advisory for 4 straight days and not a single cloud in the sky, Aimee, Scott, and Tierney took on a long day in the heat.
Our infamous "What the Duck?!" game was a hit. The goal of the game was to avoid the only duck without a number, which we called the Ugly Duckling. If you successfully grabbed a 1, 2, or 3, you were entered into a raffle for lunch for your office, a $100 Visa gift card, or both!
Community involvement is one of our passions and it has been way too long since we were able to go out and about with familiar faces. Despite the last year, everyone was in high spirits to converse and get back into the swing of things.
Being involved with an association like IREM reminds us of the importance of making a difference in the careers of those who manage and are being managed. Through professional development events and collaboration with various business, IREM sets the stage for opening doors, forging connections, and showing the way forward.
Tackling Fire Odors
6/10/2021 (Permalink)
In this photo, Ryan examines fire damage in Shakopee.
Anyone that ever shares space with a smoker knows how hard it is to get the smell out of your clothes, hair, and skin. Imagine flames in your home and that smoke is making its way through the ventilation system, going from room to room and settling upon your bed sheets, upholstery, curtains, and even your wallpaper. Regardless of the extent of fire damage to your home, it almost seems like the smoke, and its residual smell is an even bigger problem than sweeping ashes and cleaning soot.
In Shakopee, Savage, or Prior Lake, your smoke and fire damage is ideal for our SERVPRO team to tackle. Our team of experts trains specifically to address all consequences of a home fire, regardless of its size. Once we arrive at your home, we invite you to trust our knowledge and expertise as we attack all aspects of fire damage, including ridding your home of the unpleasant smell of smoke.
The term deodorizing is the all-inclusive name we use for agents capable of neutralizing or eliminating odor molecules. In practice, there are quite a few options to expel smells from your home. Our SERVPRO team considers each option and its benefits before applying it to your home. In some cases, we may bring special equipment such as an ozone generator, ventilators, or pressure sprayers to help us in deodorizing your home. In other instances, such as the use of deodorizing pellets, the application is straightforward and does not require extra equipment or space. When we exhaust our resources, and the smell remains, we may opt to use a sealant in your home, which permanently traps odor molecules, so your senses do not pick up on them.
SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake is available to you around the clock. Our hotline is available 24/7 to meet your needs. Call us at 952-403-1050 as soon as it is safe to enter your home and let us address the smoke and soot remains as quickly as possible. Our careful and knowledgeable approach helps us leave your home, "Like it never even happened."
Mold Remediation: Mold versus Mildew
5/29/2021 (Permalink)
This is an example of growth behind baseboards in a home after water damage had occurred.
When a home suffers a water damage event, a mold infestation can quickly arise and spread throughout a home in 48-72 hours. Because mold can produce allergens and irritants, you will want a professional that has training and experience to properly resolve the mold infestation. That's where we come in!
How can you tell the difference between mold and mildew?
Primarily mildew is a plant disease but it can thrive on any organic matter, not just living tissue. It can appear on clothing, leather, paper, walls, ceilings, floor and even on your shower wall. It usually grows in a flat pattern in a white, gray or yellowish color. It will turn brown or black over time.
Mold is usually fuzzy and appears in irregular shaped spots. It also can appear in many different colors – blue, green, yellow, brown, gray, black, or white. Mold grows on organic matter everywhere but is only visible once the colonies grow.
How can you test the affected area to see if it is mildew or mold?
If you are unsure of what the substance is within the affected area, you can easily have it tested. The best course of action is to ask for professional assistance (like us!), but you can also fairly easily identify whether it is mildew or mold with a little bit of household bleach.
1. Apply a few drops of bleach to the affected area.
2. Wait 5 minutes and inspect the spot.
3. If the affected area becomes lighter, you are more than likely dealing with mildew. If the spot remains dark, it is most likely mold.
Who do you call when you think you've got mold?
SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake, that's who!
If you suspect that your Shakopee home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect, assess and remediate your property. Call 952-403-1050 with any questions or concerns.

The premise for this ethics course is that although we may have solid ethical foundations and usually make rational ethical decisions, ethical lapses are likely to come when we are stressed, angry, upset, worried, or otherwise disengaged. Each and every day we are faced with decisions that could cause harm to others or ourselves. Facing ethical decisions can be very difficult, especially when we make decisions that may seem correct at first, but we later find out were not so great. As we explore what "Ethics" is, you will be challenged to become involved in group activities. The group activities will help reinforce what has been learned, as well as increase your ability to better deal with ethical decision-making in your own life.

We make it "Like it never even happened."
Flooding often happens in Minneapolis when the snow melts in the spring, and there is excess precipitation added to the already-saturated ground. Dealing with the restoration process after flood damage is an overwhelming challenge. Having the help of trained, competent professionals can make the process so much more comfortable from the actual restoration process itself to understanding how to best deal with insurance companies.

We understand that time is of the essence and respond quickly to your emergency call. Our skilled technicians are available twenty-four hours a day, every single day of the year. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.
Making a Plan
SERVPRO technicians create a customized plan for the restoration of your home. We use the training learned in SERVPRO's Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to tackle each unique situation, understanding when and how to use moisture detectors and hygrometers to measure moisture content. We also decide if the damage requires controlled demolition techniques such as flood cuts to release trapped water. During each step of the process, our project managers use their advanced training and professional expertise to recover from flood damage effectively.
Aside from creating a customized plan, SERVPRO technicians use specialized equipment and cleaning agents to remove floodwater and disinfect after black water exposure, possibly containing disease-causing microorganisms and potentially dangerous chemical contaminants. When needed, we use submersible pumps to eliminate deep water and extraction tools for remaining moisture, either truck-mounted or in portable wand form. We then use high-velocity air movers to blow warm air over moist surfaces and industrial-strength dehumidifiers to draw moisture out of the air.
SERVPRO has specially formulated cleaners containing chlorine or alcohol that attack dangerous microbes to ensure the safety and health of everyone in your home. SERVPRO technicians are qualified professionals, ready to create a plan for restoration and execute that plan using knowledge, specialized equipment, and high-quality cleaning products. We make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Shutt-ing down Storms
5/3/2021 (Permalink)
We can scale our resources to handle any size storm or disaster.
Most Common Types of Shutters
Protect Your Windows from Powerful, High Winds
When there's a storm on the radar, it's important to protect your home's windows from being damaged by strong winds and debris that is picked up. There are many ways to safeguard your windows, see the information below for some options.
Temporary Options:
Plywood: To be effective, the plywood must be thick enough and installed correctly. Here at SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake we're a licensed contractor with the state of Minnesota and can help with your board up needs. This would be the most inexpensive method of protection.
Fabric Screen: Created from storm-rated material, these sheets attach to the outside of your windows using clips or grommets. Although a little bit more pricey, these sheets are often lighter and easier to install than plywood.
Storm Panels: Made from aluminum, steel, polycarbonate, these panels bolt over the outside of your windows and are still typically lighter and easier than plywood.
Permanent Options:
Permanent options are more costly than temporary methods, but once they are installed they are much quicker to put into action if you're crunched in time.
Bahama: Similar to awnings, these shutters are permanently attached to the top of a window. They can be quickly bolted closed when high winds are predicted and are slightly decorative when not in-use.
Accordion: These window coverings are hinged and are typically made of aluminum, steel, or polycarbonate like storm panels. They fold up into a box that are forever attached to one side of a window.
Colonial: Similarly to the Accordion option, these are latched across the window, but are latched on both sides of the window.
Roll-down: With tracks along both sides of the window, the roll-down option is also very similar to the Bahama.
When you consider the possibility of extensive storm damage restoration, protecting your home's windows from high winds doesn't seem like the worst option. However, if you do happen to decide not to invest, be sure to call SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake today: 952-403-1050.
Fire Preparedness Tips for Businesses
4/26/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake is dedicated to responding immediately to your Shakopee fire damage emergency.
6 Fire Preparedness Tips
Unfortunately, a fire can occur at any point in time. Although preventative measures can be taken, businesses will never be able to truly protect themselves against one. There are fire preparation strategies to prevent accidental fires and curb fire damage.
1. Equipment
Ensuring that the right equipment in accessible is the first line of defense for when the unthinkable happens. It is crucial to regularly inspect sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, and alarms.
2. Waste Disposal
If your business has products that are flammable or involve any hazardous materials including oils to aerosol, it is important to understand protocol for the disposal of these items.
3. Storage
In addition to knowing how to dispose of hazardous materials properly, they need to be stored in the correct environment. It is imperative that they be kept within a dry, secure location that has excellent ventilation.
4. Cleanliness
Who doesn't love a tidied building? Along with the aesthetic appeal of a clean building, reducing clutter will help minimize the spread of a fire and will keep the pathway to emergency exits clear. It is important that that safety of your employees is at the top of the list.
5. Plan
Every single property, whether it is a home or business, should have an emergency and evacuation plan. A fire preparation plan should include a hierarchy of people in charge in order to ensure that the plan goes smoothly. These should be people who are able to lead a crowd as well as stay calm in stressful situations.
6. Communicate
Many properties have a plan in place but unfortunately do not communicate it to their employees. It is vital to conduct equipment demonstrations to ensure everyone knows how to use fire extinguishers and other tools.
Fire preparation can minimize risk and ensure the situation is handled in the best possible way. Even if a fire does break out there are fire and smoke damage professionals at SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake that can help restore your business back to its preloss condition.

You might be asking yourself: "How will I know if there are unsafe levels of mold present?"

- Mold has a nasty musty odor that signals its presence. If you notice an odd scent even after eliminating all other possibilities, mold testing will help you verify if you really have mold issues, if it is just a stain on the wall, or an odd smell.

Mold Prevention Tips for a Commercial Property
4/5/2021 (Permalink)
Our technicians are certified in Antimicrobial Remediation by the IICRC and collectively have 30 years experience in inspecting and restoring homes.
When you discover a patch of small mold in your commercial property it may not seem like a big deal. However, if moisture presents itself in another area with spores, the opportunity for the mold to spread will occur rapidly. Here are some simple tips to prevent mold in your commercial property.
Mold Problems are a no-go
Deal with all leaks quickly. The source of the leak is not important; whether the leak stems from the roof, plumbing, or wind blown in the front doors, you need to deal with it immediately. Moisture is the perfect catalyst for mold growth.
Lots of moisture in the air? It may be beneficial to run a commercial dehumidifier. The goal is to keep your humidity around 40% to help prevent mold growth in the future.
Maintain superb ventilation! Keep your HVAC system in good working order by changing filters and cleaning your vents and ducts regularly. SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake has commercial services such as these to help you maintain your property.
Call SERVPRO to deal with any flooding immediately. If standing water is not extracted properly by a professional, it may lead to secondary issues such as seeping into cracks, causing damage to furniture, and exhibit a breeding ground for mold.

Home Water Damage Prevention: Essential Practices
3/29/2021 (Permalink)
Our advanced equipment helps to detect hidden moisture, extract the standing water quickly, and thoroughly clean and dry your home and belongings.
Many people lack the proactive approach of protecting their home with preventative care. In 2017, 19.5% of property damage claims were water and freezing incidents. You're obviously reading this for a reason -- don't be one of those people!
Don't Delay Preventative Care, Take Action Now!
The Plumbing Process
If you don't know how your indoor plumbing system works, you need to get educated before water damage does occur. You'll want to put yourself on a schedule and check your hoses to the dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, and water heater at least once a year. If any hose begins to leak you'll need to replace it, otherwise replace these hoses once every five to seven years. You are also able to purchase a moisture detection system that will tell you when a leak occurs.
Prevent Water Seepage
A lot of basements are wholly underground which leaves room for water to seep through the foundation if it has shifted, or leave it susceptible to water moving through cracks which causes erosion. If it has been awhile, you may want to invest in resealing your basement before any water damage occurs. If you're unsure if there are any issues, keep an eye on your basement during a heavy storm. If you notice any spots that are becoming wet you should paint it with a water sealant. You may also call the experts at SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake for an estimate.
Repair Your Home's Exterior
Although lots of obvious damage is seen on the inside, it's important to look from the outside in. Ensure that your windows are sealed by using caulk. If you are worried about leaks in the roof, check to make sure all of your shingles are in good condition and not missing or damaged. Also, check your irrigation systems and sprinklers. It's important that they don't face directly towards the house because they have potential to cause foundation and wall damage.
Those are three simple tips to help you begin taking precautionary measures to help prevent water damage in your home. If you suspect any water damage or discover any mold, give SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake a call at 952-403-1050.
Water Damage By Class: What's the Difference?
3/22/2021 (Permalink)
If your home or business suffers damage from water, fire or smoke, call our team today- our team is always ready to help!
According to the IICRC there are a total of 4 classes that distinguish the types of water intrusions in regards to the amount of water that has affected the property. Even though water damage is separated into classes, we know it's not a very classy act to deal with.
IICRC Class One:
The restoration work required for class one damage is the smallest amount of the four classes. An example would be a water tank that leaks onto a concrete floor or a sink overflowing in a kitchen. Although the least work, it is crucial to have a timely reaction in order to stop the water from spreading.
IICRC Class Two:
Class Two goes a step farther than one, of course, and involves a much larger area and greater absorption of water. If there are porous items in the area they are susceptible to absorbing a significant amount of water, which often correlates to a much larger amount of remediation time.
IICRC Class Three:
Class Three means that the largest amount of water has spread across an entire room, often coming into contact with poor porous materials such as carpets, furniture, and even ceilings. Structural damage can occur rather quickly after a Class Three water damage event meaning the intrusion of water needs to be addressed appropriately by a professional. Events such as a natural disaster often fall into class 3 as well as a vastly flooded basement.
IICRC Class Four:
Often requiring high-powered equipment to get the job done, a class four water intrusion event means that water gets stuck in tightly confined areas. Removing water from this type of event can be extremely difficult, even for professionals. Class Four describes situations where water gets trapped after an initial phase of the water damage restoration process has already occurred.
It is paramount to identify the correct category and class of water damage in order to determine the correct course of action.
SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake is Faster to Any Size Disaster and when it comes to a water damage event, it is essential to react quickly to avoid structural damage, secondary hazards, and mold growth. Each category and class will require different equipment and various skills to be completely remediated. Give us a call at 952-403-1050 and let our experts handle the fine details.

- Remove porous materials. Porous materials such as drywall and carpets will have to be discarded if they are affected my moisture and mold.
- Clean and disinfect the non-porous objects. Professionals will use an EPA and CDC certified blend of cleaning supplies to clean the hard surfaces. Once they are disinfected, the cleaning should remove all spores.
- Dry out the effected area. As we stated before, moisture is a catalyst for mold. The entire area should be properly dried so that there is no risk of another mold incidence. Depending on the severity, the certified technicians may bring in air movers and dehumidifiers to expedite the process.

- If you know where it is, shut off the water source so that the damage does not get worse.
- Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building when access to the power distribution is unsafe from electrical shock.
- Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. Do not enter rooms where the ceiling has begun to sag from retained water.

Protecting Your Pets During a Storm
2/15/2021 (Permalink)
Torrential rains and thunderstorms can flood basements and, seemingly every year cause the Minnesota River to flood.
Precautions are necessary when a thunderstorm or flash flooding is upon us. Thankfully, as humans, we know the importance of having a plan of actions. However, our furry friends are not so capable. For some, your pets are your family and just like a family heirloom they hold importance. Preparing for a storm can be overwhelming and can be even more chaotic if you have a frantic animal around.
Protect Your Furry Little Friends
- Keep your pets inside. If left outdoors, they could be hurt by damaging winds or run away due to fear.
- Ensure you have proper supplies for your pet. Water, non-perishable pet food, their medications, leashes and ID tags, and a first aid kit.
- Microchip your pets. If your animal runs away, a microchip makes you reachable if they were to be found by an animal shelter or vet.
- Pet ID: Make sure that your pet has tags that are up to date and accurate. Always include a phone number as well as your name.
Keeping your best friends safe is always a priority. Make sure you are prepared to care for those who look to you for safety everyday.
Many of these tips are easily added to a precautionary plan that you might already have created. A few more simple steps can go a long way when disaster strikes. For all of your storm damage questions and concerns, please call 952-403-1050. We'd love to settle any anxieties you may have.

We will clean belongings, furniture, keepsakes, clothes and anything else in your house that makes it your "home."
How does SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake determine what to do with smoke damaged items?
Fire damage is an intriguing issue because temperature, whether the fire is smoldering or blazing, affects necessary cleanup measures differently. Similarly to water damage, smoke odor and particles can easily penetrate any crack and crevice on your property. If these particles are not handled in a proper manner, the smoke odor has the potential to stick around for months after a fire. Proper cleaning, immediate odor neutralizing efforts, proper ventilation, and consistent debris removal efforts are critical to saving as many of your belongings as possible. Timing is the most crucial component of successful smoke remediation.
Are you running out of time?
The IICRC, a global leader in all types of remediation, identifies these time windows:
- Within minutes: Porous materials and synthetics must be immediately addressed to prevent permanent discoloration.
- Within hours to days: wooden furniture, flooring, painted walls, and clothing can become permanently stained. Metal surfaces will begin to rust, pit, and corrode which often requires refinishing or replacement.
- Within weeks: Prolonged soot exposure will embed itself in the fibers and surfaces resulting in a longer, more pricey restoration with a higher likelihood of replacement.
With our restore versus replace mentality, SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake does everything within our capabilities to bring your items back to preloss conditions.
Give us a call today at 952-403-1050 so we can help make your home seem "Like it never even happened."

Employees who exhibit symptoms at work or become sick during the day should be separated from other employees, customers, and visitors immediately. Preparing for a Blackout

We are proud to be an active member of the Shakopee community and want to do our part to make our community the best it can be.
Storms are extremely unpredictable. The conditions created by thunderstorms or tornadoes, such as damaging winds, can result in loss of power for your property. It is important to prepare for the possibility of a power outage before it occurs to ensure safety for both you and your property.
Preparation Strategies for a Power Outage
Take inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity. Ensure that these items are connected to a source of power, such as a generator, to guarantee that they will be in working condition if the power were to go out.
Sign up for local alerts and warning systems. If bad weather is on the way, you can already be a step or two ahead of the game and enact these practices sooner rather than later.
Review the supplies that you have handy in case of a power outage. Have flashlights with extra batteries and ensure you have nonperishable food and water.
Be sure to read and follow all manufacturer directions if using a generator for electricity. It is imperative that your generator is properly set up. If the power goes out and the generator fails, you're in for more issues.
Install carbon monoxide and smoke detector with battery backup in central locations on all levels of the property.
As with tornado and flood preparation, power outage preparation is essential to take care of your property. Putting Out Your Fire Extinguisher Questions
1/11/2021 (Permalink)
We specialize in fire and water damage restoration, the cornerstone of our business.
Do you know where your nearest fire extinguisher is at work? Do you know how to use one? It is imperative to have a fire extinguisher on your property that is in proper working condition. In addition to knowing the location, it is important to know the type of extinguisher to put out fires and how to properly use them.
Q&A
Q: What are the different kinds of fire extinguishers?
A: The U.S. Fire Administration defines five separate fire extinguishers used on a variety of fires.
A - used for ordinary material fires, such as wood, cloth, or paper
B - for use with combustible or flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, or oil
C - for use with electrical equipment like appliances and tools
D - for use with metals that are flammable
K - used for animal oils, vegetable oils, and fats in cooking appliances.
Although there are five separate categories for fire extinguishers, many of the types are multipurpose. If you look at the label, they carry multiple letter definitions and can put out many material fires.
Q: What is the proper way to use a fire extinguisher?
A: The U.S. Fire Administration uses the acronym "PASS" as a way to remember how to use an extinguisher properly.
P - Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
A - Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
S - Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
S - Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
If the fire becomes too hot to handle, be sure to call 9-1-1. To keep yourself safe, it is important to use extreme caution within a fire damaged structure. SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake offers a full line of fire clean up and restoration services. Give us a call at 952-403-1050 to learn more.
Common Sources of Water Damage in a Commercial Building
1/4/2021 (Permalink)
In an average year, we successfully restore and repair close to 1,000,000 square feet of commercial property.
Owning and running a commercial building in Chaska/Chanhassen means that you've got a lot on your plate.
How to Diminish Water Damage Issues
Drainage
The most highly trafficked areas in businesses are the bathrooms and kitchens. The drains from the sinks and the toilets are doing extra work meaning you should do whatever you can to keep them from flooding and the flow moving. Maintenance should perform regular checks on them and you could consider conducting a camera-scope inspection every once in awhile. To avoid a clogged toilet, buy thin toilet paper, post signage about what can go within the toilet, and provide plenty of labelled waste receptacles.
Pipes
Ensure that you are knowledgeable on the types of pipes that your commercial property has. If they are older, often made of copper, galvanized iron, or polybutylene, they are prone to damage and do not usually last long. It might be worth your while to consider replacing your pipes to help prevent future disasters. Even if they aren't older pipes, it is still important to check for corrosion or leaks more often than not. It is also pertinent to ensure that your pipes are properly insulated to avoid freezing pipes during the winter.
Fire Sprinklers
Sometimes the fire sprinklers in a commercial property can be triggered by something as simple as a warm light nearby or burnt food in the microwave. In order to prepare for an event such as a random sprinkler going off, you should have a water damage restoration company picked out like SERVPRO and register for the Emergency Ready Plan.
There's a lot to keep track of in a commercial building. Adding a regular maintenance routine and an Emergency Ready Plan with SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake could save you time and money.
Call 952-403-1050 today with anything, even a simple question.

Fire Up your Holiday Spirits - Not the Holiday Tree!
12/15/2020 (Permalink)
Ensure you're properly using your holiday lights to prevent household fires.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Christmas lights cause 40% of Christmas tree fires.
Whether you put your lights up before the turkey goes into the oven or if you're a week-of decorator, safety for you and your loved ones is the most important thing. Christmas lights are not only one of the most time-consuming tasks for the holidays but are surprisingly one of the most dangerous as well.
3 Tips for Christmas Light Safety
1) Follow The Rule of Three.
The general rule of thumb is this: more than three sets of Christmas lights into a single extension cord may cause overheating. Be sure to check (and re-check) the wattage of our home or use a power strip with a built-in circuit breaker.
2) Replace Old or Damaged Christmas Lights
Just as you would check your oil on your car or replace the tires on your vehicle when they become worn, inspect the condition of your Christmas lights. SERVPRO of Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake provides time and money saving services, but lights are much cheaper to replace rather than fire damage.
3) Read the labels! Indoor lights belong indoors, and outdoor lights belong outside.
Indoor-only lights are not sufficiently insulated compared to outdoor lights and will not be friendly with moisture from the outdoors. Indoor lights often become hazardous once they encounter water, snow, or any other outdoor element.
Even if you follow guideline after guideline and take tender care of your lights, holiday lights still have the potential to cause fires. That's where we come in!
Steps to Take after Household Fire Damage:

Basement Flooding Shakopee
11/12/2020 (Permalink)
Reasons Your Basement Might Be Flooding
If you suffer flooding damage in your basement in Shakopee or nearby areas like Savage, Prior Lake or other areas of Minnesota, it's vital to get help. The right professionals can identify the reason for the damage and make sure it doesn't happen again. Let's check out some reasons your basement might be flooding and where you can find help.
Reasons for Water Damage in Basements
Water damage can occur in basements for a number of reasons. Two of the most common include sump pump failure and seepage caused by such issues as a poor foundation or backed-up sewage or floor drains. Let's break these down further.
Failing Sump Pump
People count on their sump pumps to keep their basement dry by getting rid of water that would otherwise flood it. Unfortunately, there are several reasons your pump might fail. When you lose electricity during a storm, an electric pump certainly won't work, for example. Also, old equipment breaks down and gets overworked, which can lead to flooding.
Drain and Sewage Backup
If your basement floor drain gets clogged or backs up with sewage or runoff, it can cause major issues that can even threaten your health. It's vital to get these issues fixed because they can result in major structural damage to your home.
Foundation Problems
Old foundations can become porous and allow water to seep through. They can also develop cracks that let water access your basement. Poor foundation issues can also endanger your home and should be fixed immediately.
SERVPRO Shakopee/Savage/Prior Lake Can Help
If you're experiencing flooding or moisture in your basement, call SERVPRO Shakopee for help. We can identify and address the problem to get you dry and safe once more. Call us 24/7 at 952-403-1050 for help.

Mold in your HVAC system?!
12/7/2017 (Permalink)
Most people probably don’t often think about the possibility of mold inside of their HVAC system. However with up to 20 gallons of water being produced a day the risk of mold developing in your HVAC system is very real. The most common service calls are made due to water leaks caused by condensation in fact the main three causes of leaks in a HVAC system are:
-A crack or hole in the Overflow Pan
-Clog inside of condensate line which causes the Overflow pan to flood
-Air filters become clogged with dirt causing evaporator coils to ice up and drip
Once mold has established itself inside of condensate lines it feeds off tiny airborne particles that are sucked into the system via the return airflow ducts. Within the condensate drain lines Zoola can form. Zoola is a mixture of sludge and grime packed with mold which can accumulate in the drain causing it to clog and thus lead to flooding of the overflow pan and creating water damage within the house or structure. Be sure to replace filters and maintenance done on your HVAC system regularly, however if a problem does occur feel free to call us here at SERVPRO of Scott County/Chaska (952)-403-1050 and we’ll help make it "Like it never even happened".
Freezing Water Pipes
11/22/2017 (Permalink)
As the temperatures drop and fall comes to a close it’s important to make sure that you take steps to insure that your water pipes don’t freeze and burst. Here are a few helpful tips to help prevent any freezing in your pipes.
- Make sure to drain the water from the supply lines of your outdoor sprinkler system and swimming pools, also be sure to remove and drain outdoor hoses as well
- Keep your homes thermostat to the same temp day and night; if you’re planning to be away from your home for a few days be sure to keep the temperature no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit
- Keep interior doors open to allow heat to better travel throughout the home
- Adding extra insulation in areas such as unfinished basements, attics and crawl spaces
- On very cold days letting your faucet go on cold with a light drip can help prevent freezing pipes

Sump Pump Disasters
5/5/2017 (Permalink)
This a great example of a damaged sump pump
Sump pumps are designed to remove water from a drain tile system around the foundation of the house. They have a tendency to burn out and it can result in catastrophic water damage including mold, damage to carpets and padding, woodwork, drywall, insulation and personal property.
SERVPRO of Scott County/Chaska has a crew who is trained to tackle damage from sump pump failures. Our goal is to be on site as soon as the homeowner notices the damage, this way we can prevent any further damage from happening.
Our Process
If there's substantial standing water, our crew will start by moving contents and extracting the water from the affected area. Then we take moisture readings of the walls and wood trim to determine where we need to focus on drying. Our next step is to determine whether carpet, if present, is salvageable. Last step is to strategically place air movers and dehumidifiers for thorough and efficient drying.

As a homeowner, the last thing one wants to discover is mold; it's unsightly and the smell can overpower a home. Sometimes a water leak can be so well hidden that it goes undetected long enough for mold to grow. Here are some signs of mold damage that are a result of a water leak:
1. Utility Bills:
If you notice a significant jump in your water bill over a consecutive number of months, this can be a red flag and be a result of a water leak. If your water usage hasn't gone up to your knowledge, it's worth looking into further to make sure there aren't any leaks in your home.
2. Excessive Moisture:
If you notice that walls or baseboards in your kitchen, bathroom, or basement are warped, this can be an indication of water damage and potential mold growth. Mold thrives in dark, damp areas. SERVPRO is trained to detect and remove mold, extract water, and make sure that there won't be any further mold growth.
3. Water Stains and Discoloration

Water Damage from Pipe Burst in Eden Prairie
9/30/2016 (Permalink)
The culprit! The pipes weren't drained before winter causing it to burst.
A broken pipe from a water source that was outside of a home caused major flooding in the basement. SERVPRO of Scott County/Chaska is trained to go through the necessary steps to treat such emergencies.
In this case, the previous owner of this home did not allow the water to drain from the pipes before the winter season came, which caused the pipe to burst. There was a few inches of standing water throughout the majority of the basement. We checked the walls for moisture and sure enough all readings were showing moisture.
Our Process:
- Identify the source and stop leaking water.
- Quickly extract the standing water and strategically place fans around the basement along with a dehumidifier.
- Remove the baseboards.
- Allow the carpet and walls to dry as much as possible using our professional grade fans and dehumidifier.
- Check the readings of the walls.
- Remove any drywall that needs to be replaced in order to begin the rebuilding process.
All these steps are taken in order to prevent further damage such as mold.
Types of Water Damage:
Not all water is the same. We identify three categories when determining the best water restoration method.
Category 1 - This is known as white or clean water. These are typically due to refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, overflowing sinks or bathtubs, or damaged faucets. This type of water is harmless to people, but after 48-hours can turn into category 2.
Category 2 - This is known as gray water. This type of water can be caused by wastewater in bathtubs, showers, or sinks. This includes wastewater that has NOT come into contact with human waste. This can be harmful and can pose as a health risk. If not treated within 1 or 2 days this can become category 3 due to fast-paced mold and bacteria growth.
Category 3 - This is known as black water. This water is caused by sewage and is highly contaminated by chemicals in fertilizer, ground debris, or animal waste. Black water contains toxins or organisms that can pose a serious health risk and should not come into contact with people or animals.
Since every water damage situation is different and involves various safety categories of water, we offer a range of services to cover water damage cleanup projects of any severity or size.
When you experience water damage of any kind, quickly give us a call at SERVPRO of Scott County/Chaska by dialing (952) 403-1050. We will come to your property, assess the damages and create a plan of action for remediation so that we can restore your home "like it never even happened."
